A Brief History of the World

For most of human history, the supernatural world remained hidden. Shifters, witches, dragons, and other magic users lived in secrecy alongside humanity, concealed behind carefully guarded traditions, ancient magic, and unspoken rules. To most humans, monsters and magic existed only in folklore. Only a small number of trusted humans were ever allowed to know the truth.

Across much of the modern timeline—including the events of: Claimed by the Pack WIld Lake Wolves Wild Ridge Bears Mammoth Forest Wolves Dragonkeepers Wolfguard Protectors —the human world functioned normally. Governments operated as expected. Cities thrived. Technology advanced. Most humans lived completely unaware that magic users existed among them. Behind the scenes, however, packs, covens, dragon clans, and ancient magical bloodlines operated in secret.

For centuries, secrecy was survival. Magic users concealed themselves from humanity to avoid persecution, exploitation, and war. Many supernatural societies developed strict internal rules designed to keep their existence hidden.

Some organizations manipulated world events from the shadows long before humanity became aware of magic. One of the most powerful of those organizations was The Ring. They were made up of malevolent Fae with the goal of enslaving all magic users.

Over a thousand years ago, an ancient conflict erupted between shifters and witches.
The war lasted for decades and devastated both factions. Both sides weaponized items they stole from dragonkind against each other. (Dragonblood, Dragonstone, Dragonsteel) By the time it ended, dragons had vanished from the world and were widely believed to be extinct. But a very small few managed to go into hiding and survive for centuries undetected.
The outcome of the conflict was effectively a draw—but the consequences shaped supernatural history forever.

Roughly 300 years ago, a second war broke out between the mages and shifters. No one agrees on who started it. There were no victors, only loss.
The war ended when each side unleased a weapon of mass destruction against the other.
The shifters murdered the eldest members of each of the covens. the loss rippled far beyond the battlefield. With them died hundreds of generations of magical knowledge—ancient teachings, bloodline secrets, and spells that would never be recovered.
The witches unleased The Curse on the shifters.
After a three centuries, the truth has become impossible to separate from myth. No one truly knows which act of violence came first—only that both sides answered brutality with annihilation.

During the Second Great Shifter War, all covens acted as one, casting a powerful, dark magic curse intended to wipe out all living shifers within a generation by making them sterile. The curse did not work as intended. Instead, the effect was to render it virtually imossible for female shifters to give birth to female shifters, only males. Male shifters can make with certain human women and produce other male shifters. There are rare exceptions and no one knows why. But generally, only one or two female shifters of each species is born within a single generation. Some shifter groups (wolf packs, bear clans etc), have tried to break the curse in sometimes malevolent ways. Nothing worked.

Twenty-five years from now, the hidden world shattered. A catastrophic global event was unlashed on the major cities of the world. It exposed the existence of all magic users. Fear and chaos spread almost instantly as humanity learned monsters were real. They blamed them for the attacks. While magic users have supernatural powers, they made up less than one percent of the global population. The revelation changed the course of history forever. The events of the series Dragonborn Daughters, Mark of the Wolf, and Forsaken Fate all take place roughly ten years after this global catastrophic event.

The exposure of magic users triggered a worldwide conflict later known to mages and shifters as the Third Great Shifter War. To humans, it is known as the Apocolypse. Humans, witches, and shifters turned on one another as governments collapsed, cities burned, and fear overtook reason.

The war itself was manipulated by hidden forces seeking control over all magic. The Ring was behind the coordinated global attack that exposed shifters. In the aftermath, members of The Ring came forward promising to help the humans defeat magic users once and for all.
Within five years, The Ring had taken control completely in the first truly global dictatorship.
Shifters and mages were enslaved. Shifter territories were claimed. It created the largest supernatural purge in recorded history. Shifters and mages were enslaved and stripped of their ancestral lands.

Post-Apocalyptic Territores

The largest population centers in the post-war world fall within the Controlled Territories—vast regions governed directly by the Ring.
All residents living within these borders are considered subjects of Ring authority and are subject to strict surveillance, registration laws, and movement restrictions. Magic users are heavily regulated, conscripted, or detained depending on their abilities and perceived usefulness.
Publicly, the Ring presents the territories as stable and civilized. In reality, dissent is crushed quickly, personal freedoms are limited, and fear maintains order.
Many of the Ring’s highest-ranking officials are magic users themselves, enforcing the very system that subjugates their own kind.

Scattered regions still exist where shifters live mostly free from outside control. These areas were carved out by treaties and represent the regions where shifiter populations were most concentrated and thus most difficult to control. The “luckiest” shifters and mages live in Oasis Territories. Many shifters outside these territories tried desperately to smuggle themselves or loved ones into them. When ware broke out, many shifters who were residents of these territiories were caught outside of them and separated from their families for a generation.

Between Oasis Territories and Dominion Territories lies the Neutral Zone—a dangerous, unstable expanse where survival often depends on trade, alliances, and information.

Wolf Shifters

Most wolf shifters live within organized packs led by an Alpha. Traditional pack hierarchy includes: Alpha Beta Enforcers Hunters Pack Members Pack bonds are emotional, political, and telepathic. Under normal shifter law, packs are democratic. Totalitarian shifter packs do exist, but they violate shifter law. Only a Tyrannous Alpha can become a totalitarian pack leader.

Alphas are physically stronger than ordinary wolves and possess heightened dominance instincts. Many Alphas can: command weaker wolves project dominance compel submission strengthen pack bonds Some become respected protectors. Others become a abberrant version known as a Tyrannous Alpha.

Wolf shifters are among the oldest and most numerous shifter bloodlines in the world. Known for their pack loyalty, heightened instincts, and territorial nature, wolves have played a central role in supernatural society for centuries. Many of the most powerful supernatural factions in history have been wolf packs.

All magic users are descended from fae or were created with fae magic.
The earliest fae sought to capture the essence, instincts, and strengths of the natural world within living beings. Wolf shifters were born from the essence of wolves, while other bloodlines emerged from bears, dragons, jaguars, and countless other creatures.
For this reason, many fae consider themselves the first magic and view shifters as descendants of their creations.
Some extremist fae factions later used this belief to justify attempts to dominate or reclaim control over shifterkind.

Wolf shifters can transform between human and wolf form. Transformation speed, size, and strength vary depending on: bloodline age dominance magical power Some wolves possess unusually large or powerful forms tied to ancient bloodlines. Partial Shifts – In human form during a state of heightened emotion (most commonly lust or anger), a shifter’s eyes will flash into their wolf eyes. Sometimes, their fangs will drop or their claws will come out. A wolf shifter is able to inflict damage with their claws or teeth without fully shifting into his wolf.
The “Clothes Problem.”
All shifters (including wolves) shift out of their clothing if they’re wearing it at the time of the shift. In most cases, the process shreds their garments. Hence, when they shift back into human form, they are nude.
Some shifters solve the “problem” by leaving fresh clothing nearby. Or they strip before they shift. This, of course, isn’t always possible.

A Tyrannous Alpha is a unique form of wolf. This individula has given in to the more dark, baser side of his instincts. He has the ability to exert total dominance over his pack members. They are forced into complete subjugation. The Tyrannous controls when his pack members shift (or don’t), when they eat, sleep, mate. The most powerful Tyrannous Alpha can also control the behavior of his pack members and force them to do things against their will, including murder. This is a form of torture to the subjugated pack member. If forced to stay in his wolf for too long, he may lose the ability to shift human forever. A Tyrannous bond can be broken only upon the death of the Tyrannous himself. Afterward, many of the subjgated pack members die with him. Only those strong enough survive. Wolf territories exist across the globe, ranging from isolated wilderness strongholds to heavily fortified pack-controlled regions. Notable territories include: Wild Lake — Located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, Wild Lake is home to multiple wolf packs and is considered the largest known territory where independent packs coexist peacefully under mutual alliances. Northern Russia — Home to the powerful Kalekov wolf pack, one of the oldest and most feared bloodlines in the world. The Yukon — Vast and sparsely populated, the Yukon territories have long served as refuge lands for wolves seeking isolation, freedom, or escape from political control. Kentucky — Controlled by the Kentucky Chief Pack, historically ruled by the most powerful Tyrannous Alphas ever known to have existed. Some wolf territories operate as cooperative alliances. Others are ruled through fear, bloodline dominance, or absolute Alpha control.

Wolf shifters possess: * accelerated healing * heightened senses * enhanced endurance * increased strength and speed
Only Alpha Wolves can become pack leaders. It is a consensual relationship under normal shifter law. Silver and dragonsteel remain among the few substances capable of inflicting lasting harm.

Every Alpha wolf shifter has a fated human mate. He can recognize his mate the first time he lays on her or touches her. He becomes instantly connected to her on a bio-rhythmic level. His heart begins to beat in time with hers. He can feel her presence even when she isn’t closely nearby. His urge to mate with her is nearly overpowering. For the human female, she will experience a similar physical reaction to her Alpha. She will be instantly physically drawn to him. She’ll have the urge to submit to him. Her pulse will match his. If they have intercourse, she’ll feel a throbbing sensation at the base of her neck and instinctually crave his bite there. For the Alpha, his attraction to his mate also triggers an intense, overpowering instinct to protect her. An Alpha can claim a mate even if they aren’t fated. Their union won’t produce shifter children. Note: ALL interactions between an Alpha and his human mate are innately consensual. His need to protect her would preclude anything else. He is biologically incapable doing anything to his mate against her will. An Alpha who ever forces himself on a mate is an anathema to the shifter code. However, a Tyrannous Alpha has to power to break that code. See “Mating Bonds” for further information about how the Alpha and his mate seal their bond.

Leadership within a wolf pack is traditionally passed through strength, bloodline, and dominance. Bloodline Succession In many packs, leadership passes through family lines. Children of powerful Alphas are often expected to inherit leadership positions, particularly within bloodbound packs where lineage carries significant political and magical importance. However, blood alone does not guarantee rule. Challenge Rights A wolf may challenge an Alpha for leadership. These challenges are typically physical, though some packs allow trials based on strategy, endurance, or dominance displays rather than outright death matches. In more brutal territories, challenges frequently end in death.

Decapitation & Massive Trauma Like most living beings, shifters can still die from catastrophic physical damage. Destruction of the brain, decapitation, or massive organ trauma can overwhelm even enhanced healing abilities. Poison & Venom Certain magical poisons and supernatural venoms can incapacitate or kill shifters. Some substances are specifically engineered to suppress healing, sever psychic bonds, or weaken an Alpha’s dominance abilities.

Dragonsteel is among the deadliest substances in the supernatural world.
Forged using dragon fire, dragonsteel is capable of inflicting wounds that many shifters cannot heal from naturally. Even powerful Alphas fear dragonsteel weapons.
Cages or chains made of Dragonsteel can incapacitate a shifter. They sap strength and prevent shifting into their animal. Prolonged exposure to it will weaken a shifter and eventually kill them.
Dragonsteel can be identified by the prism-like distortion it casts instead of a normal shadow.

Bear Shifters

Bear shifters organize themselves into clans rather than packs. Clans are heavily centered around: bloodline family loyalty territorial protection mutual consent Unlike wolves, bears do not naturally share large-scale telepathic communication or instinctive submission bonds. A bear’s loyalty must be earned. Because of this, bear clans often operate more independently than wolf packs and are less likely to accept outside authority.

Most bear clans are led by a dominant clan leader, often the strongest or most respected member of the bloodline. Leadership is traditionally earned through: strength reputation protection of the clan survival instincts Some clans pass leadership through family lines, while others allow succession through challenge or clan consensus. Unlike wolves, bear leadership relies less on supernatural dominance projection and more on personal loyalty and earned respect.

Bear shifters are among the oldest surviving supernatural bloodlines and are widely regarded as some of the physically strongest shifters in existence. Unlike wolves, bear clans tend to be smaller, more isolated, and deeply tied to ancestry, territory, and family loyalty. Many bear bloodlines trace their histories back thousands of years.

According to ancient fae history, shifters were originally created through powerful fae magic. Bear shifters were born when the fae captured the essence and primal power of bears within living beings.

Bear shifters can transform between human and bear form. Even in human form, traces of the bear can emerge during moments of heightened emotion or instinct. This can include: eyes flashing animalistic or bear-like elongated teeth partial claw shifts visible changes in musculature or posture Partial shifts commonly occur during: anger territorial aggression fear sexual arousal Powerful bear shifters often struggle more intensely with controlling these primal instincts.

Bear shifters possess extraordinary: physical strength durability endurance pain tolerance Among shifters, bears are widely feared for their raw power in close combat. A single bear can overpower most individual wolves in direct physical confrontation. Bears rely on brute force, aggression, and overwhelming physical dominance rather than coordinated telepathic strategy.

Among bears, the deepest soulmate bond is known as an Anam Cara. It is analogous to a fated mate as seen in wolf shifters with a few key differences. Unlike ordinary attraction or mating, an Anam Cara bond is spiritual, emotional, and instinctive. It is considered extraordinarily rare and often life-altering for both individuals involved. Many bears believe an Anam Cara represents two souls created to walk through life together. Similar to fated mates in wolves, an Alpha bear’s atraction to his Anam Cara is instant. It evokes his primal instinct to protect her at all costs. They also share a bio-rhythmic bond with synced heartbeats and fight or flight responses.

In direct combat: a single bear generally defeats a single wolf a wolf pack generally defeats a lone bear a bear clan versus a wolf pack is often considered evenly matched Historically, conflicts between wolves and bears have resulted in devastating losses on both sides. Bear and wolf shifters are deeply mistrustful of each other. Though they have worked together when necessary against a common threat.

Generally bears don’t need to hybernate. They can choose to. This can be done to help healing after a grave injury. That injury can be physical or psychological. Bears often choose to hybernate after suffering profound grief, generally associated with the loss of an Anam Cara. They can be woken during hybernation but will go through a period of disorientation where they are extremely volatile and dangerous. A bear naturally waking from hybernation is in a weakened state until he hunts (and/or mates if he’s mate bonded).

Dragon Shifters

Long before modern packs, clans, and territories existed, dragons ruled the skies. They were the first and most powerful of all shifter bloodlines — ancient beings tied directly to the earliest currents of magic created by the fae. Where wolves built packs and lions built kingdoms, dragons built empires. Then came the First Great Shifter War. By the war’s end, the dragons were believed extinct. For nearly a thousand years, their existence survived only in myth, forbidden records, and whispered prophecy. Even among shifters, many dismissed them as legends. They were wrong.

Unlike wolves or lions, dragons are not naturally communal creatures. Most dragon shifters possess deeply territorial instincts and prefer isolation outside of bonded relationships or close family structures. Ancient dragons rarely formed packs or clans in the traditional sense. Their dominance instincts are among the strongest of all shifter species. Many modern dragon shifters struggle to exist peacefully within established shifter political systems.

No surviving record fully explains where dragons came from. Unlike wolves, bears, lions, and other shifter bloodlines, dragon origins remain deeply contested within supernatural history. Ancient texts contradict one another, and much of what was once known disappeared during the First Great Shifter War. Some legends claim dragons existed before the rise of organized shifter civilization itself. Others insist they emerged from the oldest forces of magic on Earth. Whatever their true origin, dragons were feared long before recorded human history. Their power shaped wars, kingdoms, and supernatural politics for centuries before their disappearance.

Dragons are the only shifters that were not created (as far as is known) by fae magic. Their genesis comes from the earth’s own elemental magic.
As such, dragon shifters are feared by fae as they cannot turn a dragon’s own magic against itself. They did not create it.
There are two species of shifters, Ice and Fire.

Dragons are the oldest living beings on earth. Their maximum lifespan potential is unknown and much of it is lost to history. That said, they can live for centuries, possibly more than a millenia. The oldest known dragon to date is Avelina Brandhart. She has lived at least eight centuries. Aging Process Dragons mature into adulthood at a rate similar to humans until they are in their mid thirties. Then the aging process slows remarkably. After that, their physical appearance ages roughly ten human years to every two hundred dragon years. In other words, a five hundred year old dragon will look like a forty year old human. A seven hundred year old dragon will look approximately like a fifty year old human.

Dragons possess superhuman strength and speed while in their human form. Their ability to breath fire is constant no matter what form they are in. Dragons can also fly while only partially shifted. They can unfurl their wings only if they choose. Dragon shifters have far more control of their animals than other types of shifters. In fact, the term “dragon shifter” isn’t entirely accurate. Dragons only exist as a being capable of taking on a human or dragon form. In other words, all dragons can shift into human form. Not all wolves can shift human. Animals that are purely wolf (or bear or tiger etc), exist. Beings in the purely reptilian-like form only, do not exist. (Note: see Mating Sickness for the exception). Cloaking Dragons have the unique ability to throw a cloaking glamor. They can make themselves invisible to humans, shifters, witches, and other animals. This cloaking ability extends to their ancestral homeland. For example, Knoydart, the Scottish peninsula is the ancestral homeland of the Brandhart family of dragons. They draw their strength from a volcano, cloaked in dragon magic hidden to human eyes.

During the First Great Shifter war a millenia ago, dragons were hunted by other shifters for their magical properties. The war raged for two centuries. It concluded with the extinction of dragonkind. Or so it was believed…

Only one adult dragon survived. Avelina Brandhart lived in hiding for a thousand years and is alive today. She is the only survivor. She alone holds the living memory of those who came and were lost before her.
However, Avelina also saved her five dragon eggs. She breathed them into life several centuries after the war ended. They became the Brandhart brothers from the Dragonkeepers series.
Another dragon egg was also saved after the First Great War. That story is told in Freed by Fire.

One last hidden egg was saved, but fell into the hands of the Ring. That story is told in Loved by Flame of the Dragonborn Daughters series.

Dragons do not have live births. Instead, an egg is formed. The mother dragon chooses when to breathe life into it. She does this by literally breathing fire upon it until the egg hatches and a new life emerges. A dragon egg remains viable indefinitely. However, without dragonfire to hatch it, it will remain dormant forever. Any full-blooded female dragon can breathe life into an egg. It does not have to be her own. It is also possible for a male dragon to hatch an egg with fire. During ancient times when dragons were more plentiful, it was customary for both dragon parents to join their flames for the birth of their offspring. There is one known exception to the requirement of dragonfire in the birthing/hatching process. That story is told in Freed by Fire.

Dragon fated mates experience the same first pull known throughout the shifter world: heightened awareness, emotional fixation, physical longing, and a growing instinctive need to be near one another. But dragon bonds are far more dangerous than ordinary shifter bonds. A normal human woman cannot survive mating with a dragon. The power involved is too intense, too elemental, and too consuming for an incompatible body to withstand. Dragon marking is not simply a bite. It is a branding. When the bond is sealed, the mating pair is engulfed in flame. The fire does not merely surround them. It becomes part of the claiming itself, burning the mark into the mate and binding the pair through dragonfire. For a true fated mate, the flames do not destroy. They transform. Once bonded, a dragon is bio-rhythmically connected to its mate in the same way other shifters are. An unmated male dragon will eventually develop mating sickness. It is always fatal but can take a century to fully metastasize. When it does, the afflicted dragon can no longer access his human thoughts or feelings. If left alive, he becomes a weapon of mass destruction. An unmated dragon, fully succumbed to mating sickness is responsible for the Great Chicago Fire in the 1870s.

Dragons must return to the place of their birth from time to time to heal both physically and spiritually. As described in the Supernatural Powers section, dragon famlies must cloak their territories. As such, the locations of virtually all dragon territories are unknown. Most dragon territories exist at the site of a cloaked volcano.

Ice dragon territories are located within the arctic poles. No one but other ice dragons know where.

During the First Great Shifter War, shifters learned that weapons created with dragon magic could be used with devastating effect upon other shifters. This dark knowledge led to the hunting and killing of dragonkind to near extinction. The known weapons and their effect are: Dragonsteel All metals forged with dragonfire (bullets, blades of any kind, chains, cages) are deadly to shifters. Cages with dragonsteel bars are the only substance capable of holding a shifter. The same is true for chains forged with dragonfire. While held by it, it will begin to sap a shifter’s strength, render him unable to shifit into his animal, and eventually drive him mad to the point of death. Dragonsteel blades and bullets are nearly always instantly fatal to shifters. Dragonsblood As much as dragonsteel is injurious to shifters, dragonsblood has supernatural healing propeties to shifters. With the believed instinction of dragonkind, however, it was thought lost forever. (unlike dragonsteel weapons that can exist forever). Dragonscale Shields made from the scales of dragons are impenetrable by modern weapons. Only dragonsteel weapons cause damage to them.

Dragons are impervious to most weapons. Unlike the typical “kill shots” to ordinary shifters, dragon scales are impenetrable to regular weaponry. Dragon on dragon violence can result in the death of the weaker dragon. During the First Great War, however, other shifters learned that Dragonstone has unique properties that render it almost instantly fatal to dragonkind when skillfully wielded. Dragonstone comes from the fossilized shells of dragon eggs. Any weapon fashioned out of Dragonstone will kill a dragon. A popular favorite of shifters during the War were Dragonstone arrows. They could be shot from a great distance in a sniper-like fashion. A shot through the heart will kill a dragon where he stands or even in flight.

While dragons can generally only successfully mate with other dragons, there are exceptions.

The only known instances of dragon hybrids came from the matings of the Brandhart brothers in the Dragonkeepers books.
Dragon/human hybrid -Made possible from the mating of a full blooded male dragon to a human woman under a powerful deathwish protective spell from a fire mage.
Dragon/fire mage hybrid – A pure fire mage is capable of surviving the dragonfire needed for a marking.
Dragon/shifter – a full-blooded female shifter can survive a dragon mating.
Dragon/shifter offspring hybrid – The daughter of an alpha wolf shifter and a dragon produced a viable birth. Note: This type of cross-breeding can break the shifter curse and produce another full-blooded female shifter.
Hybrid Powers
The offspring of dragon/non-dragon breeding have unique powers of their own. Though they vary, it generally includes the ability of the offspring to call fire and cloak, in addition to whatever powers they inherited from their mothers.

Mating Bonds

To humans, mating bonds are often mistaken for superstition, instinct, or primal attraction. Among shifters, they are something far older and far more dangerous. A mating bond is physical, spiritual, and biological at once — capable of reshaping a shifter’s mind, instincts, loyalties, and even survival itself. Some bonds are born from fate. Others are forged through politics, war, or necessity. But once formed, few can ever truly be undone. For centuries, kingdoms, packs, and tyrants have risen and fallen over the power of the bond.

Long before a mating bond is sealed, many shifters begin to feel the pull of a compatible mate. Among wolves, the sensation often begins as heightened awareness — an inability to ignore another’s scent, presence, or emotional state. Among bears, the connection is sometimes described as anam cara, or soul companion, a quieter but deeply spiritual recognition. For human mates, the attraction is often overwhelming. Emotional fixation, possessiveness, heightened desire, and instinctive protectiveness can begin long before formal mating occurs. If the pair acts on the attraction, the bond intensifies rapidly, pulling both toward one another with increasing urgency. Though every species experiences the process differently, wolf pairings follow the most predictable pattern and are therefore the best documented.

In nearly all shifter cultures, a mating bond is sealed through marking. Traditionally, the alpha bites his mate during intercourse, most often at the neck. The bite itself is initially painful, but the wound heals within minutes, leaving behind a hypersensitive mark that becomes permanently tied to pleasure, intimacy, and the bond itself. Intercourse commonly accompanies marking, but it is not strictly required. Once marked, the mate becomes spiritually linked to her alpha. Human mates begin to share an empathic awareness with him, allowing both to feel one another’s emotional state. Though neither can literally read thoughts, deception becomes nearly impossible between bonded mates. Emotions, fear, desire, grief, and betrayal all pass through the bond with startling clarity. Because of this, unwilling bonds place the mate in extreme psychological danger. In all recognized shifter societies, marking is considered sacred and consensual. A true alpha’s instinct to protect his mate normally prevents him from forcing a bond upon an unwilling woman. There are exceptions. A Tyrannous Alpha — an unstable or corrupted alpha — may force a mark against a woman’s will. Such acts are viewed as monstrous throughout the shifter world. Tyrannous Alphas are considered abominations and are often hunted by other shifters before their violence spreads further.

Not all mating bonds begin in love. Throughout history, alphas have occasionally taken mates for political alliances, territorial peace, bloodline preservation, or power consolidation. These bonds create a permanent connection between the pair, but they differ from true fated pairings in important ways. A politically bonded mate does not fully enter the reproductive cycle associated with a fated bond. Heat cycles do not fully activate, and offspring are rarely produced. Though the connection remains real and permanent, many shifters describe such unions as incomplete — a bond formed by duty rather than destiny.

To most shifters, mating is not simply companionship. It is completion. Bonded alphas often describe realizing, only afterward, that they had lived much of their lives only partially whole. Once bonded, separation from a mate becomes physically and emotionally painful. An alpha’s senses instinctively remain tuned toward her location, emotional state, and safety. For human mates especially, the bond creates profound biological dependence. A bonded alpha can feel her fear, pain, distress, and desire through the link between them. His protective instincts intensify beyond reason, often overriding logic, politics, or personal safety. If threatened, many alphas become extraordinarily violent. This vulnerability has shaped shifter history for centuries. Among enemies of shifterkind, a common saying emerged long ago: Control the mate, and you control the alpha. Because of this, mates have frequently been hidden, guarded, traded politically, or targeted during war. Some alphas refuse to bond at all rather than expose a future mate to such danger.

A human female compatible with an alpha begins experiencing biological and emotional changes long before a mating bond is complete. If the pair begins a sexual relationship, the connection intensifies rapidly. Desire becomes progressively more consuming for both partners, developing into an almost uncontrollable need to mate. Though all shifter pairings experience some form of heat cycle, wolf pairings follow the most predictable progression. The Rise After marking occurs, the mate enters an escalating phase known as the Rise. During this period, her need for physical closeness and repeated coupling with her alpha becomes nearly insatiable. If the bond is neglected for too long, the mate can become physically ill. In extreme cases, prolonged separation or deprivation can become fatal. For human mates, reaching full heat may take months or even years of repeated mating and marking. Female shifters differ significantly. Most enter full heat almost immediately after their first mating. Heat Heat is the peak fertility phase of the mating cycle. During this period, the bonded pair is consumed almost entirely by the instinct to remain together and mate repeatedly. Most seek isolation or shelter until the cycle passes. Packs and clans traditionally protect bonded pairs during this vulnerable period. Impregnation Successful conception among many shifter species involves a biological process known as knotting. During impregnation, the male remains physically locked with his mate for an extended period ranging from several hours to multiple days. Implantation occurs during this time. Because the pair is highly vulnerable while locked together, conception attempts are traditionally carried out in protected territory or guarded shelter.

Alpha’s Mates Only a rare category of human women — known informally as alpha’s mates — possess the biological compatibility required to carry shifter offspring. The precise mechanics remain unknown. Most scholars believe compatibility carries some genetic component, though many compatible women appear to arise seemingly at random across human bloodlines. Due to the ancient Curse placed upon shifterkind, viable female shifter births are exceedingly rare. Most children born from bonded pairings are male shifters. Female children born from such unions are typically human, though they almost always possess future compatibility with an alpha bond themselves. Childbirth For much of history, childbirth among shifter mates was extraordinarily dangerous. Many women did not survive the process. Over centuries, specialized traditions of midwifery developed among human mates and shifter communities alike. Women who survived carrying a shifter child were often sought out to guide and protect others through the same ordeal. Even in modern territories, birth among bonded mates remains a time of intense caution and communal protection.

Very little can sever a true mating bond. Death will break it, though the emotional and physical consequences are often catastrophic. Many shifters descend into madness after losing a mate. Others become violent, feral, or suicidal. Some simply do not survive the grief. For this reason, bonded mates have long been weaponized against powerful alphas. There is one other known method of breaking a bond. If a bonded mate willingly accepts the mark of another alpha, the new bond supersedes the old one. The original connection is shattered permanently — a process considered emotionally devastating and profoundly dangerous for everyone involved.

Wolf Packs In modern wolf packs, bonded human mates are generally monogamous with their alpha. Historically, however, many packs practiced consensual polyamorous bonding structures. In ancient territories, an alpha’s mate was often sexually connected to multiple members of the pack. This tradition emerged partly from necessity. Alphas frequently left for war, hunting, territorial defense, or succession challenges, and the pack itself helped care for the mate during his absence. The practice also reinforced loyalty and unity within the pack bond. Such arrangements were always considered consensual within traditional pack law. Though rare today, some modern packs still maintain these customs. The Claimed by the Pack series depicts one example of a traditional polyamorous wolf pack structure. Female Shifters Full-blooded female shifters possess far greater sexual and social autonomy within shifter culture than human mates. While many female shifters choose monogamous pairings with a single alpha, exclusive bonding is not culturally expected. Multiple partners are common among several species and territories. Among lion prides, polyamory is universal. Lioness shifters traditionally maintain multiple mates and are considered central social and political figures within pride structure.

Big Cats & Other Shifters

Unlike wolves, tiger shifters do not organize themselves into formal packs with ranked dominance hierarchies. This is largely because all male tiger shifters possess inherently Alpha-level instincts and dominance traits. Male tigers are naturally: territorial dominant aggressive highly possessive resistant to outside authority As a result, large organized tiger clans are extremely rare. Prolonged proximity between dominant male tigers often leads to violent territorial conflict unless restrained by family ties, political necessity, or mutual respect. Because every male tiger is effectively an Alpha by nature, tiger society tends to revolve around: temporary alliances personal territories mate bonds individual power rather than formalized leadership structures.

Tiger shifters can transform fully between human and tiger form.
Like wolves and bears, they are also capable of partial shifting during moments of heightened instinct or emotion.

Unlike wolves and bears, tiger shifters do not maintain formal pack or clan territories. Most tigers are considered rogues within supernatural society, living highly independent and often nomadic lives. Their territories are usually temporary, loosely defined, and tied more to personal dominance than permanent political borders. Male tigers are intensely territorial and rarely tolerate prolonged proximity to rival Alphas, making large stable tiger communities exceptionally uncommon. While temporary alliances between tigers do occur, they are typically: short-lived unstable based on mutual benefit or survival rather than loyalty or formal hierarchy. Some tiger shifters choose isolation entirely, wandering between supernatural territories without pledging allegiance to any clan, pack, or governing authority.

Tiger shifters experience fated mate bonds similar to those of wolves. Other Shifter Biology

Lion shifters are among the most powerful and politically influential of all big cat bloodlines. Unlike solitary tiger shifters, lions organize themselves into prides with a matriarchal structure modeled after real lion dynamics. Female lions form the permanent core of the pride, controlling: territory bloodlines alliances succession Most prides are ultimately ruled by a dominant lioness whose bloodline determines leadership continuity. Male lions are more transient, often moving between prides or challenging rivals for territory, influence, and mating rights. Pride structures can become unstable due to competition between dominant males. Not all shifter bloodlines possess overwhelming supernatural strength. Some species are considered “lesser shifters” within supernatural society due to their comparatively limited abilities. Badger shifters are one example of a lesser shifter bloodline.
Though physically tougher and stronger than ordinary humans, badgers possess relatively limited supernatural abilities and rarely play major political or military roles within the wider supernatural world.
Within the Kimber White novels, badger shifters primarily appear in supporting roles rather than as dominant supernatural powers.

Mages & Witches

For centuries, humanity used the word “witch” to describe anyone capable of wielding magic.
Most practitioners reject the term. The proper title is mage.
Mages are humans born with the ability to channel supernatural energy through bloodline inheritance, ritual practice, and force of will. Some possess only minor abilities. Others are capable of devastating displays of elemental power, soul manipulation, or realm-based magic.
Though often grouped together by outsiders, mage abilities vary widely depending on lineage, affinity, training, and access to ancient knowledge.
Most magical bloodlines remained hidden from humanity until the mid-21st century, operating in secret covens scattered throughout the world. Their existence fueled centuries of folklore, persecution, conspiracy theories, and fear.
Modern mages remain deeply divided over how magic should be used — and whether humanity was ever meant to wield it at all.

Every mage is connected to a single elemental conduit. That conduit becomes the foundation of their magic for the rest of their life. The four primary elemental affinities are: Fire Water Earth Wind While all mages draw power from the same force, each experiences magic through a different elemental connection. A fire mage channels heat, flame, and combustion. A water mage draws strength from rivers, storms, oceans, and the movement of water itself. Earth mages are tied to stone, soil, metal, and stability. Wind mages channel movement, pressure, speed, and air. At its most basic level, elemental affinity grants a mage limited command over their conduit and natural resistance to it. Fire mages cannot be burned by ordinary flame. Water mages can survive conditions that would drown most humans. Earth mages possess extraordinary physical resilience. Wind mages often move with unnatural speed and agility. More advanced abilities develop through training, bloodline strength, and emotional control.

All magic originates from a singular force known simply as The Source. Mages often describe it as a wheel. At the center exists The Source itself — ancient, infinite, and alive with raw magical energy. Each mage is connected to that center through an elemental conduit, often referred to as a spoke. Fire, water, earth, and wind are not the power itself, but the pathways through which power is accessed. No two connections are exactly alike. Some conduits are naturally stronger than others. Some bloodlines possess unusually deep ties to The Source. And in rare cases, powerful emotion, trauma, or forbidden rituals can distort the connection entirely. The stronger the conduit, the greater the danger of losing control.

The origins of magic are far older than humanity realizes.
Mages did not create magic. They inherited it.
Long before recorded history, the fae introduced magic into the human world. Exposure to fae energy altered select bloodlines, creating the first human mages and forever linking their descendants to the supernatural realms beyond Earth.
As the fae realms began to collapse, that connection only deepened.
Some mages view their abilities as a gift.
Others believe humanity became infected by something ancient, powerful… and never fully understood.

Most mages do not fully manifest their abilities until adolescence. The moment magic awakens is known as the Declaration. Though the experience differs between bloodlines, nearly every mage describes the same sensation: The element calls to them. For some, the Declaration is violent — fire erupting beneath their skin, storms forming without warning, rivers responding to emotion, or the earth physically trembling beneath their feet. Others experience visions, dreams, or an overwhelming pull toward their elemental source. A mage who has not Declared cannot fully access their power. Once the connection forms, it can never be undone.

A mage’s elemental affinity is only the beginning of their power. Beyond innate abilities, mages can also cast structured spells — ancient magical workings created centuries ago by the Elder mages and preserved within sacred grimoires. These spells form the foundation of modern magic. Some are simple protections or healing rituals. Others are capable of devastating destruction, soul manipulation, conduit binding, or realm-based magic powerful enough to alter the balance between worlds. Modern mages cannot create entirely new spells. That knowledge was largely lost during the First Great Shifter War when shifter forces slaughtered the coven elders responsible for preserving and developing advanced magical practices. With their deaths came the extinction of the last known spell-creators. All living mages today are spell-casters, not spell-writers. While mages can adapt existing spells — shaping them through their elemental affinity or combining rituals in new ways — the creation of truly original magic remains beyond modern understanding. Some believe magic itself is evolving. Others fear humanity has already reached the limit of what it was ever meant to wield.

To humans, grimoires are little more than myth — ancient spellbooks tied to folklore and witchcraft. In reality, they are among the most sacred objects in mage society. Every grimoire contains preserved spells, rituals, histories, conduit maps, and magical records passed down through generations of covens. Most are housed within hidden mage libraries concealed from the human world through powerful illusion and protection magic. But grimoires are far more than ordinary books. Each spell exists as living magic bound to the page itself. When a mage calls upon a spell, the magic temporarily leaves the grimoire and enters the caster directly, disappearing from the physical page until the spell is completed. Once released, the spell returns to its rightful place within the book. No spell is ever truly carried alone. Through ancient ley line networks woven beneath the Earth, every mage library remains connected to the others across the world. A mage standing inside one library can summon a grimoire housed continents away, provided they possess the knowledge and authority to access it. This connection also creates accountability. Every spell leaves behind a magical signature known as a Trace — an imprint capable of identifying which mage cast it, which grimoire it came from, and where the magic was drawn. Among mages, very little magic goes completely unseen

Covens

Covens are the foundation of mage society. Every coven governs a specific geographic territory, often tied to ancient ley lines, hidden libraries, and bloodline settlements that have existed for centuries. While outsiders often imagine covens as small circles of practitioners, most function more like hidden governments operating beneath the human world. Each coven is led by a Council of Elders. Despite the title, an Elder is not necessarily the oldest member of a bloodline. The position belongs to the most powerful living mage within a family faction residing inside coven territory. Some elders are centuries old. Others ascend far younger through strength, political influence, or magical dominance. The council serves as the ruling authority of the coven, overseeing: Territorial disputes Enforcement of coven law Protection of magical secrecy Regulation of forbidden magic Oversight of grimoires and libraries Judgment and punishment of dangerous practitioners Every elder represents not only themselves, but the entire family faction tied to their bloodline. Together, those bloodlines form the coven itself.

Coven borders are taken extremely seriously. Mages born into recognized bloodlines automatically belong to the coven governing their family territory. Independent mages or practitioners without bloodline connections are treated far more cautiously. A mage wishing to reside within another coven’s boundaries must formally request permission from the Council of Elders. Approval requires a unanimous vote. Even a single dissenting elder can deny entry. This system exists to prevent infiltration, dark magic corruption, political instability, and unauthorized access to magical resources hidden within coven lands. Some covens are known for welcoming outsiders. Others remain almost completely closed to unfamiliar bloodlines. Unauthorized mages living within coven territory are considered a direct threat.

Though laws vary between territories, most covens enforce several universal prohibitions: Reckless use of dark magic Exposure of mage society to humans Theft or destruction of grimoires Unauthorized realm manipulation Bloodline violence within the coven Forbidden soulbinding practices Punishment depends on the severity of the offense. Minor violations may result in restriction from magical libraries or temporary severance from coven resources. More serious crimes can lead to exile, magical binding, or execution. Some covens are known to be merciful. Others are feared even among mages themselves.

Special Magic

Not all magic is viewed equally within mage society. Some disciplines are tightly regulated by covens. Others are forbidden outright. The most dangerous forms of magic often require enormous sacrifice, emotional intensity, or direct manipulation of the soul itself. Many covens maintain hidden archives containing rituals too volatile for ordinary practitioners. Some believe certain forms of magic should never have survived the First Great Shifter War at all.

Dark magic is not tied to a single spell or elemental affinity. It is a classification used for magic capable of corrupting the caster, damaging the soul, or weakening the natural barriers between realms. Common forms of dark magic include: Soulbinding Death wishes Conduit corruption Realm tearing Forced magical domination Certain blood rituals The longer a mage practices dark magic, the greater the risk of psychological instability, emotional erosion, obsession, or complete loss of control. Some practitioners become consumed by their connection to The Source, believing themselves chosen or untouchable. Others simply disappear. Despite its reputation, dark magic is not inherently evil. Some rituals are used for protection, survival, or sacrifice. Intent matters as much as the magic itself. Still, few covens trust mages who rely on it too heavily.

Spellheads are non-magical humans addicted to stolen magical energy. Unable to access The Source naturally, they consume magical residue through artifacts, stolen spells, blood rituals, or exposure to active magic. The experience produces an intense euphoric effect often compared to a narcotic. The damage is catastrophic. Long-term exposure frequently leads to: Violent instability Hallucinations Emotional collapse Physical deterioration Obsession with magical power Many spellheads eventually become Hollowed — individuals so consumed by magical corruption that little of their original personality remains. Both mages and shifters consider them extremely dangerous.

Blood magic is one of the oldest and most feared forms of dark magic. Unlike traditional spellcasting, blood magic binds a spell directly to the life force of the mage casting it. By using their own blood within the ritual, the caster permanently anchors the magic to themselves, creating a living connection between mage and spell. Because of that bond, blood magic is extraordinarily difficult to break. Once cast, the spell remains active until the death of the mage who created it. Blood magic is most commonly associated with: Long-term curses Soul bindings Oaths and magical contracts Generational punishments Protective wards tied to specific bloodlines

Despite their connection to The Source, mages are mortal. They do not possess the supernatural strength, speed, or regenerative abilities common among many shifter species. Outside of active spellcasting and magical protections, a mage’s body is as vulnerable as any ordinary human being. A mage can be shot, poisoned, stabbed, or beaten to death. Most mages rely on protective spells rather than physical durability. Powerful practitioners often maintain layered wards capable of shielding themselves or others from harm, but those protections require preparation, concentration, and magical strength to sustain. The only significant exception lies within a mage’s elemental affinity. A fire mage cannot be burned by ordinary flame. A water mage cannot drown. An earth mage cannot be buried alive or crushed beneath the ground they command. A wind mage cannot be suffocated. Their conduit protects them from the element to which they are bound. Everything else can still kill them.

The Great Shifter War was fought in secrecy centuries before the supernatural world revealed itself to humanity. Lasting nearly a hundred years, the conflict devastated both mage and shifter civilizations across the globe. No surviving historical record agrees on how the war began. Shifter histories claim mages sought dominion over supernatural bloodlines and magical territories. Mage accounts insist shifter factions initiated the violence through coordinated attacks on covens and sacred libraries. By the war’s end, neither side emerged victorious. Countless bloodlines were extinguished, and the slaughter of the coven elders destroyed generations of magical knowledge forever. In retaliation, mages unleashed a devastating curse upon shifterkind that caused female shifters to stop being born, pushing many species toward extinction. (Note: shifter historians disagree with this version and claim their attack on the elders was in retaliation to the curse. No one truly knows which version is true). Though centuries have passed, the wounds left by the war continue to shape relations between mages and shifters to this day.

Fae*

Long before humanity understood the existence of magic, the fae walked between worlds. Ancient, powerful, and deeply misunderstood, the fae are not human, though they often appear so when taking corporeal form. In their purest state, they exist as beings of living light and energy capable of bending reality itself through illusion, dimensional travel, and raw magical force.
Much of what humanity considers mythology — fair folk, spirits, tricksters, gods, demons — originated from fragmented encounters with the fae across centuries.

The fae do not originate from Earth. They exist within interconnected realms separate from the human world, places governed by unstable magic and distorted laws of time. Travelers who enter a fae realm may experience hours passing while years vanish on Earth — or return moments later to discover entire generations gone.
Portals between realms are rare, dangerous, and heavily tied to magical conduits hidden throughout the world.
Many ancient mage libraries, artifacts, and sacred territories were built atop weakened barriers between realms.

The abilities of the fae far exceed ordinary mage magic.
